대덕 롯데마트 2층에 자리한 스펀지(Sponge)는 해면이라는 의미를 가진 이름처럼 바다 속 이야기를 담고 있다.

멀리 방풍림 사이로 보이는 바다를 찾아가듯 스펀지는 파사드를 통해 공간을 내비치며 지나가는 이들의 발길을 붙잡는다.

따로 출입문이 없이 롯데마트 복도에서 바로 이어지는 입구는 파사드에 이어져 자연스레 스펀지 공간 안으로 그들을 안내한다.

공간에 들어서면 가장 먼저 수분을 가득 머금은 홀을 마주한다.

물빛으로 가득한 바닥과 동선을 유도하는 물결 등의 표현으로 홀은 스펀지 내에서도 물의 밀도가 가장 높은 모습을 보여준다. 홀을 중심으로 나머지 공간들은 각기 덩어리진 모습으로 바다 속 서로 다른 이미지를 연출한다.

먼저 홀에 자리한 매끈한 곡선으로 길게 늘어진 묵직한 회반죽의 벽 건너편으로 사이드 홀이 자리한다.

두 공간을 나누는 이 벽은 기존 건물의 평면이 가진 곡선을 그대로 내부로 끌어들여 힘있게 다시 그은 선이다.

이는 스펀지가 건물의 곡선형 평면에 면하는 자리에 위치한 특성을 내부에서 살리고 있는 것이다.

이처럼 건물의 외부선으로부터 파생된 이 벽을 통해 바라보는 사이드 홀은 내부 공간이지만 마치 외부인 것 같기도한 모호한 경계의 느낌을 전해준다.

그리고 사이드 홀 너머 실제 외부 건물의 투명한 창 밖으로 보이는 모습은 수평선 너머의 보다 먼 세계의 장면이다.

A seafood buffet, Sponge, contains a sea story as a ponge is a living thing in the sea.

By showing its interior to express searching the sea beyond a windbreak forest through the facade, Sponge attracts passers-by's attention.

There is no door and so the entrance near the hallway has the facade to guide to the space of Sponge naturally.
After you enter the space, you will meet the hall to express water.

The floor of the hall expresses the color and the current of water. The other spaces express their own images in the sea.  

First, there is a side hall beyond the long winding and mortared wall of the hall.

The wall to divide the two spaces implies a curved line aligned to the curved shape of the building.

So, Sponge expresses its curved shape of building by using the interior.

Because the line of the wall is corresponent to the outline of the building, the side hall seems to be a outdoor space.   

The view through the transparent windows at the end of the side hall is likely to be a scene beyond the horizon.

특히 해가 지고, 주변 대지에 짙은 어둠이 깔리면 마치 바다 속 미지의 심연을 바라보는 기분이 들기도 한다.

홀의 중심에서 복도 쪽 파사드에 면하는 부분에는 마치 바다 위에 떠있는 것 같은 데크가 자리한다.

축 늘어진 천으로 둘러싸인 이공간은 마치 덩굴이 진 페르골라의 느낌으로 홀 위를 부유한다.

특히 이곳은 파사드를 통해 공간을 내다볼 때 천이 올려지고 내려짐에 따라 시야를 한번 걸러주는 역할을 한다.

입구 쪽에서 바로 이어지는 내부 홀은 슬라이딩 벽과 커튼 등을 통하여 자유로운 구성이 가능한 공간이다.

물이 가득했던 중앙홀과 달리 이곳은 우드로 깔린 바닥과 벽을 싸고 있는 한지에 새겨진 식물의 이미지 등 한껏 수분이 빠진 모습을 공간에 담았다.

우직한 직선과 힘차게 휘어진 곡선. 2차원적인 선들이 그려내는 평면에서의 스펀지의 모습은 강인한 힘을 가지고 있다.

그러나 이들이 3차원의 공간으로 재생된 후에는 강인한 힘 보다는 부드러운 움직임을 갖는다.

공간을 지배하는 바다 속 이미지가 확연하게 분리되던 공간들을 하나로 이어주며 평면상에서 보이던 강한 경계의 힘을 가볍게 풀어주고 있는 것이다. 마치 고정되지 않은 경계로 엮어지는 바다 속의 모습처럼~

Especially, the outside scene after sunset seems to an scene about an abyss.

There is a deck which seems to be on the sea at the center of the hall near the facade.

The deck is covered by a hanged blue cloth so as to express a pergola with climbing plants.

Especially, a blue hanged cloth plays a flitering role about the view through the facade.

The inner space adjoined to the entrance consists of several rooms made by walls and curtains.   

Contrary to the central hall expressing a lot of water, this space has the wooden floors and the walls with beautiful paintings of  trees.

The lines and curves Sponge has used have seem to be tough in a two dimensions.

In conrast, they appear soft in the 3 dimensional space.  

The images of the sea scenes connect the separated spaces and  mitigate the lines expressed the boundaries. This is like space of water doesn't have any boundary.
